Welcome to Cata

Welcome to Cata

Cata is a picturesque village in the Amatole Mountains. It is one of South Africa’s spectacular new tourist destinations, off the beaten track. Cata is close to the town of Keiskammahoek, a one-and-a-half hour drive from East London.  It is three hours from Port Elizabeth and five from Bloemfontein or Lesotho.

Cata is a perfect place for a short holiday stay. Whether you are an adventurous individual, or you are travelling with your family, Cata offers a broad range of activities for every taste and every age: hiking in the Amatole mountains, trout fishing in the Cata river, bird watching, horse-riding, mountain-biking and the well-known Cata museum. And Cata is the perfect environment in which to learn basic Xhosa.

Cata is a paradise for children… bicycling or horse-riding or learning a little of the local language. And, of course, they could meet the local children and together with them, look for cattle in the afternoon.

This programme was ironically called “betterment“ and affected millions of people all over South Africa. This, and the successful fight for restitution, is documented in the Cata museum. read more
